Mt 10,26-33

First Reading

Jr 20,10-13

1 0 I hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! They are saying, “Come on, let’s publicly denounce him!” All my so-called friends are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. They say, “Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him.” 1 1 But the Lord is with me to help me like an awe-inspiring warrior. Therefore those who persecute me will fail and will not prevail over me. They will be thoroughly disgraced because they did not succeed. Their disgrace will never be forgotten. 1 2 O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, you test and prove the righteous. You see into people’s hearts and minds. Pay them back for what they have done because I trust you to vindicate my cause. 1 3 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord! For he rescues the oppressed from the clutches of evildoers.

Second Reading

Rm 5,12-15

1 2 So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned— 1 3 for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin when there is no law. 1 4 Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed. 1 5 But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if the many died through the transgression of the one man, how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man Jesus Christ multiply to the many!
