First Reading

Gn 18,20-32

2 0 So the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so blatant 2 1 that I must go down and see if they are as wicked as the outcry suggests. If not, I want to know.” 2 2 The two men turned and headed toward Sodom, but Abraham was still standing before the Lord. 2 3 Abraham approached and said, “Will you really sweep away the godly along with the wicked? 2 4 What if there are 5 0 godly people in the city? Will you really wipe it out and not spare the place for the sake of the 5 0 godly people who are in it? 2 5 Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the godly with the wicked, treating the godly and the wicked alike! Far be it from you! Will not the judge of the whole earth do what is right?” 2 6 So the Lord replied, “If I find in the city of Sodom 5 0 godly people, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” 2 7 Then Abraham asked, “Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord (although I am but dust and ashes), 2 8 what if there are five less than the 5 0 godly people? Will you destroy the whole city because five are lacking?” He replied, “I will not destroy it if I find 4 5 there.” 2 9 Abraham spoke to him again, “What if 4 0 are found there?” He replied, “I will not do it for the sake of the 4 0 .” 3 0 Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak! What if 3 0 are found there?” He replied, “I will not do it if I find 3 0 there.” 3 1 Abraham said, “Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, what if only 2 0 are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the 2 0 .” 3 2 Finally Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak just once more. What if 1 0 are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the 1 0 .”

Second Reading

Cl 2,12-14

1 2 Having been buried with him in baptism, you also have been raised with him through your faith in the power of God who raised him from the dead. 1 3 And even though you were dead in your transgressions and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he nevertheless made you alive with him, having forgiven all your transgressions. 1 4 He has destroyed what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness expressed in decrees opposed to us. He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.
